Why I hate Diving

The Balon d'Or is supposed to be the award for the top European player of the year. Once again the award was given to an attacking player. I don't mean to pick on attacking players, but, my goodness, you guys make many many mistakes. I'd rather see a solid holding mid, or pacey full back receive the award as they do the unexpected. I'm digressing, but, my point is that the award was given to a winger who spends more time flopping onto the pitch than he does moving around as a bidpedal.

Its not that C. Ronaldo isn't exciting to watch, he is. There are few players with his flair on the pitch. This coupled with his 42 goals in all competitions meant something. But, in his 42 goals, how many times did he miss? How many times did he hold the ball too much? How many times did he track back to help his team defensively. When you take these things into account I don't believe ronnie is worthy of the title.

The problem is now that we will have little kids all over the world trying to emulate the ronnie dives. "Lets see, if I drag my trailing leg long enough I'll get some contact and be able to roll around in agony and hopefully get the other player a booking, or better yet, I'll get a PK." I'll need to make sure to pack some magic spray in my ref bag next spring to be able to take care of the increase in injuries associated with the ronnie diving syndrome.
